FEB 20, 2015
NEW BEDFORD - U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren praised Buzzards Bay Coalition staff Friday, lauding the group's multi-year effort culminating in the U.S. Coast Guard's Feb. 6 withdrawal of litigation related to a state oil prevention law adopted after the 2003 oil spill in Buzzards Bay.
"Thank you for all of the work that all of you did," Warren told staff gathered in the nonprofit organization's office near New Bedford's waterfront. "I hope you keep up this good work ... and that this work can be a model for other areas."
Warren, U.S. Sen. Ed Markey and U.S. Rep. Bill Keating - all Massachusetts Democrats - sent a letter Feb. 5 to Admiral Paul F. Zukunft, commandant of the Coast Guard, urging it to stop pursuing litigation that challenged parts of the state's Oil Spill Prevention Act, adopted in 2004.
