Washington, D.C. - President Biden announced that he has nominated Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Angel Kelley to serve on the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Judge Kelley was recommended to Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey as a top candidate for the federal judicial vacancy by the bipartisan Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Judicial Nominations. 

"We were glad to recommend Judge Kelley to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and today we are thrilled to announce that President Biden has officially nominated her for the position," said Senators Warren and Markey. "Judge Kelley has been a leader in urging her colleagues on the bench to reckon with racial injustice and has demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing equal justice under law. We are certain that she will be a terrific addition to the federal bench and we will work to make sure she is confirmed as quickly as possible."

On January 4, 2021, Senators Warren and Markey convened the Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Judicial Nominations to solicit, interview, and comment on applications for federal district court vacancies in Massachusetts. The Committee comprises distinguished members of the Massachusetts legal community appointed by Senators Warren and Markey, including prominent academics and attorneys, and is chaired by former Massachusetts District Court Judge Nancy Gertner.

The Committee reviews applications, interviews candidates, and ultimately makes recommendations to Senators Warren and Markey on candidates to fill vacancies on the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
