Senator Warren, Congressman Tierney Take Lead on Reauthorizing Funds for Essex National Heritage Area
Washington, DC - Today, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman John Tierney announced legislation to extend the federal government's commitment to the Essex National Heritage Area.
"Essex National Heritage Area is a treasure of the Commonwealth and an important part of the local economy in Essex county," said Senator Warren. "I am glad to introduce legislation to reauthorize Essex as a national heritage area to preserve its resources and landmarks so that Massachusetts communities and visitors can continue to learn about and fully appreciate its rich culture and historical significance."
"National Heritage Areas are public-private partnerships that leverage state, federal, local and private funding to protect national significant resources, promote historic preservation, enhance conservation, and spur cultural tourism. The Essex National Heritage Area is a prime example of how these kinds of federal investments can strengthen communities, foster job creation and generate local revenue. We must continue to invest in partnerships like this one," Congressman Tierney said.
"Our Senators and Congressmen have consistently been staunch supporters of Essex Heritage's work in promoting trail development, educational outreach, and cultural tourism on the North Shore and Merrimack Valley," said Annie Harris, Director Essex National Heritage Area. "Filing this legislation today is the next step in continuing to improve the quality of life in this region and the future work of Essex Heritage. Thank you, Congressman Tierney and Senator Warren."
The Essex National Heritage Area was one of the first to be authorized as part of the Omnibus Parks Act of 1996. In 2007, Congressman Tierney and then-Senators Kennedy and Kerry successfully reauthorized the program for five years. That authorization recently expired.
