Senator Warren's Statement on the Anniversary of Supplemental Security Income

WASHINGTON, DC - United States Senator Elizabeth Warren today released the following statement on the anniversary of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Forty-one years ago today, SSI was signed into law as part of amendments to the Social Security Act.

"For 41 years, SSI has been a lifeline for low-income older Americans and people who can't work because of disabilities. We have an obligation to support and strengthen this critical program, which helps millions of people make ends meet. We should take steps to improve SSI so that everyone who needs it can access these important benefits, and that we're doing all we can to lift people out of poverty."
