Sen. Warren Applauds HELP Committee's Approval of Employment Non-Discrimination Act
Urges Full Senate to Pass Measure Ending Workplace Discrimination for LGBT Americans
WASHINGTON, DC – United States Senator Elizabeth Warren today applauded the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s approval of S. 815, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).
“The HELP Committee’s bipartisan approval of ENDA is a landmark step toward ensuring no one is fired or discriminated against because of who they are or who they love,” said Senator Warren. “Senator Ted Kennedy first introduced ENDA in 1994, and for years was a champion fighting for equal rights in the workplace. As senator from Massachusetts, that makes me especially proud to be a cosponsor of this bill, and I urge the full Senate to act swiftly to pass it.”
ENDA would make it illegal to discriminate in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Current federal law prohibits employment discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age and disability – but not sexual orientation. It is currently legal in 29 states to fire or refuse to hire someone simply because of his or her sexual orientation, and in 38 states it is legal to do so based on gender identity.
