Harris and the Democrats are creating solutions to the housing crisis

There was a time when a young couple starting out could put a small down payment on a house and start building wealth in their early 20s. Mortgages were manageable enough that when I was a kid and my daddy lost his job, my mom could take a minimum wage job at Sears and cover our monthly payment, with money left over for utilities and groceries.

Forty years ago, the typical home in Boston cost four and a half times the salary of a Boston Public Schools teacher. Today, that home costs about $950,000, nearly 10 times that teacher’s salary. For renters, it’s even harder. Rents in Massachusetts are now more expensive than in any other state in the country — the median asking price is more than $3,200 a month.

People talk endlessly about the escalating cost of housing, but for decades, policy makers have sat on the sidelines while the problem has gotten worse and worse. That’s why one of my top priorities is to lower the cost of housing, and I’m going to work with future president Kamala Harris to get it done.
