THE TAX ADMIN SURGE

Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) are introducing legislation early next week that would simplify math error notices that the IRS sends to taxpayers.

The corrections made by the IRS frequently reduce taxpayers' refunds. But Warren, Cassidy, the national taxpayer advocate and other lawmakers from both parties also believe the math error notices don't supply enough information to recipients, and that the IRS should be forced to tell taxpayers that they have 60 days to contest the agency’s changes.

Both Warren and Cassidy said it was imperative for the IRS to offer more clarity to taxpayers about what Warren called "notoriously confusing error notices."

"Taxes are already complicated, and the last thing Americans need is more confusion," Cassidy said.

And here’s how bipartisan an idea this is: The House version of the bill, sponsored by Reps. Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa) and Brad Schneider(D-Ill.), just cleared the Ways and Means Committee 41-0.
