Politico Pro: Warren presses Trump’s USTR nominee on ‘haphazard’ tariffs

Senate Finance Committee member Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) asked the nominee to lead the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to explain President Donald Trump's "chaotic and haphazard" approach to tariffs and trade in a letter sent Tuesday.

Warren in her letter calls tariffs an "important strategic economic tool" but took the Trump administration to task for courting a trade war by threatening to impose 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada.

Warren's letter is the latest signal that Democrats will seek to link Greer to the dizzying approach to trade that Trump has embraced in the first weeks of his second term.

"While the President's interest in this policy area is evident, the incoming administration's precise trade agenda has been difficult to pin down," Warren wrote in the letter, obtained exclusively by POLITICO. "You will be tasked with the actual negotiation of trade agreements on President Trump’s behalf, and thus acting as the representative for this agenda."
