WBUR: MIT Fusion Energy Research Project Is Restarted

February 24, 2014

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Now that federal funding has been restored for a fusion energy research project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is proposing long-term funding for the project.

She says year-to-year funding carries too much risk of another shutdown of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, like the one last year.

"A big part of our task now starts, and that is to make sure that we're getting long-term guaranteed funding," Warren said Monday, joining researchers to restart Alcator C-Mod.

MIT's fusion reactor is one of three in the country and has the potential to power entire cities with little environmental impact by burning hydrogen.
