Senate Democrats Defend Americans’ Social Security on Senate Floor

Ahead of Senate Vote-a-rama, Democrats speak on floor about ways Trump, Musk, DOGE Social Security cuts are hurting Americans

Senate Democrats launched Social Security War Room earlier this week

Washington, D.C. – Ahead of tonight’s consideration of the Republican budget resolution in the Senate, Senate Democrats took to the Senate Floor to defend Americans’ Social Security. Senate Democrats recently launched their new Social Security War Room, a coordinated effort to fight back against Trump, Musk, and DOGE’s attacks on Social Security.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.): “We need to honor our sacred promises under Social Security, and we need to tell those billionaires and billionaire corporations they can pay their fair share to make this country work. That's the fight that we are having on the floor of the Senate today, and that is the fight between Republicans and Democrats right now in Washington. I know which side I stand on, and I see which side the Republicans stand on.”

U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.): “This is [Donald Trump and Elon Musk]’s plan. First, they cut the staff. Then, they cut the services, and finally, they say ‘it doesn’t work.’ Privatize it, let the billionaires run it, what could possibly go wrong? It is up to each of us to stop them and to protect Social Security and Medicaid.”

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii): “The idea that we are going to balance the budget on the backs of seniors who have paid into an earned benefit — it is wrong…Leave Social Security alone.”

U.S. Senator Tina Smith (D-Minn.): “President Trump and Elon Musk’s ‘move fast and break things’ mentality is breaking Social Security…What’s really happening here is they are trying to make it harder for people to get what they are owed.”

U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.): “We are not going to allow Musk, Trump, or their billionaire buddies succeed in destroying Social Security with their lies, their cuts, and their cruelty. We will not neglect the promise we made, and we will preserve security and dignified retirement for everyone.”
